Kidney diseases can worsen asymptomatically for a long time, so early detection plays a key role – emphasizes the newsletter of the Hungarian Dietitians’ National Association (MDOSZ) Academy of Nutrition. According to the publication, there are approximately 850 million chronic kidney patients worldwide, and without treatment, the condition can worsen into chronic kidney disease and then kidney failure.

The newsletter highlights that in order to protect the kidneys, it is worth regularly screening for the most important comorbidities – diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and family history are also significant risk factors. Simple laboratory tests may be sufficient to make a diagnosis: the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urine protein determination.

The MDOSZ material also draws attention to the fact that the condition of the kidneys is also influenced by lifestyle and nutrition in the long term: excessive salt intake, persistent high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes can all accelerate the deterioration of kidney function. As part of prevention, the organization highlights the recommendations of the SMART PLATE®, including increasing vegetable and fruit consumption, favoring whole grains, reducing processed meats and adequate fluid intake.
