Nearly half of travelers do not take out travel or accident insurance, even though accidents and illnesses during vacations can cost millions, according to research by MBH Bank and an analysis based on data from CIG Pannónia Insurance.

According to a statement sent to MTI on Friday, more and more of those who travel with insurance are choosing digital solutions: the proportion of travel insurance policies taken out online has nearly doubled in a year.

According to research by MBH Bank, 56 percent of respondents take out travel or accident insurance before traveling, while 18 percent never take it out. The survey also shows that nearly half of the population travels abroad at least once a year, and they are more likely to take out insurance for beach trips than for sightseeing. In the 2023/2024 season, 23 percent of CIG Pannónia’s customers purchased air travel insurance, while more than half chose the EU insurance package, which offers full protection for trips within the European Union.

The proportion of air travel insurance increased slightly during the period under review, with nearly every third trip being outside Europe. Among the additional insurances, insurance related to sports, extreme sports or sea voyages was requested by 4.2 percent of customers in the season under review, with trip cancellation insurance remaining low in popularity, as in previous years. Every fourth insured person is a minor, they said.

According to research by MBH Bank, 47 percent of respondents have already encountered some kind of inconvenience while traveling. The most common such case is a significant flight delay, but 11 percent of holidaymakers have also experienced that they or a relative needed emergency care due to illness, while 8 percent were in a similar situation as a result of an accident. In addition, it is common for passengers to lose their luggage or documents, and although less frequently, there are also examples of them becoming victims of theft during their trip.
