The anti-shrinkage regulation has already appeared in the gazette
According to the decree, starting in February, shops must draw the attention of customers if the packaging of the product has decreased, but not the price.
From now on, you must notify stores if you have started selling a smaller package of a product. With this, the government wants to break shrink inflation, which means that while the packaging of a product has decreased (for example, instead of a liter of soft drink, there is only 0.75 liters in the bottle), the price remains the same, reports Telex. Until now, it was known that there would be such a decree, and it appeared in the Hungarian Gazette on Monday evening.
In accordance with the decree, in stores with a turnover exceeding HUF 1 billion
- If a product sold between January 1, 2020 and July 1, 2023 is put on the market in a new, smaller packaging, then the retailer must indicate for two months that something has become smaller.
- However, there is a loophole: if, in addition to the smaller package, the previous larger package is also sold for at least six months, then nothing needs to be indicated.
- The decree enters into force on February 1.
- On the other hand, for those products that will be marketed between July 1, 2023 and February 29, 2024, information sheets must be displayed only one month later, from March 1.
- Manufacturers and wholesalers must also inform stores that something has become smaller.
- If manufacturers and shops do not comply with this, they can be fined up to HUF 1 million per product.
