Time-based delivery is important even for younger customers – for those over 30, it is almost a basic expectation

Home delivery is the most popular delivery method across all age groups, compared to parcel machines, collection points or in-store collection – this was revealed in the results of a multi-country study commissioned by DODO, a provider of smart logistics services, covering Hungary[1], the Czech Republic[2], Slovakia[3] and Germany[4].

However, there is a significant difference in the proportion of people preferring home delivery across different age groups: while in Hungary just over half of the youngest people used this service, more than two-thirds of those aged 50-59 and more than three-quarters of those over 60 chose this delivery method for their online purchases. In the Czech Republic, the proportion of people preferring home delivery does not show a similar difference by age group, with all age groups using this service at a rate of around 50%. In Slovakia, on the other hand, the popularity of home delivery increases with age, similar to the Hungarian results: half of the youngest age group requested this delivery method, while the rate is already over 70% for the oldest. A similar trend can be observed in Germany, with the difference that the proportion of those requesting delivery is the highest among all age groups, with nearly two-thirds of Germans between the ages of 18 and 24 and 89% of those over 55 selecting this delivery option.

Examining the reasons, it turns out that in Hungary, younger age groups, i.e. those between 18-29 and 30-39, are less satisfied with home deliveries than those over 40. This means that improving the quality of home delivery services is particularly important in their case. The perception of this in different age groups in the Czech Republic and Slovakia shows a similar pattern, with members of the younger generation being less satisfied with deliveries to their home or work address than members of older age groups.

The extent to which people consider it important to be able to specify in advance when they will receive their ordered product from the courier varies by age group. In Hungary, more and more people use this option as they get older: while 64% of those aged 18–29 expect their package to be delivered in a pre-selected time slot, 70% of those over 30 expect their package to be delivered in a pre-selected time slot. The trend is similar in the Czech Republic: two-thirds of those aged 45–59, while more than half of those aged 18–29 and 30–44, consider time-based delivery important. In contrast, in Germany, this rate is higher among young people: every second respondent in the 18-24 and 25-34 age groups demands this, while only 39% of those aged 45-54 expect this from webshops. In Slovakia, the differences between age groups on this issue are smaller than in other countries: regardless of age, respondents would like to receive their online orders at their preferred time at an above-average rate of 77-80%.
