Mangalica festival in Debrecen
Over the last twenty years the mangalica population has been increased to its forty-fivefold and as the part of the strategy, the current mangalica pig population would be increased from 60 thousand to 150 thousand until 2020 – Tóth Péter, president of the National Association of Mangalica Breeders told at the Wednesday press conference heralding the Mangalica Festival that will be held in Debrecen during the weekend.
On the summer of 1991, only three Mangalica breeders were in the country with 198 Mangalica sows. Currently, the indigenous Hungarian animals are bred by 150 breeders, while the number of registered sows is 9 thousand and annually 60 thousand fattening pigs are produced, which is two percent of the Hungarian pig population – Tóth Péter told MTI.
