The capital of Mallorca would limit mass tourism
Mass tourism in Palma, the capital of Mallorca, would be restricted with austerity measures, according to the plan presented by the municipality on Wednesday.
Mayor Jaime Martínez said that they would not grant permission to rent new properties for tourist purposes, since there are more than 50,000 accommodations in the city of approximately 450,000 inhabitants.
The number of nightclubs and bars in certain tourist-crowded areas of the city, such as the Paseo Marítimo or Playa de Palma sections, would be reduced, so that new applications would not be approved even in the places of establishments that are closing down.
In addition, restrictions would be introduced on hotel ships arriving at the port, either by imposing an upper limit on their number or size. Passengers traveling to the city would have to pay an entrance fee, he explained.
