The decline in retail trade in the Czech Republic continued in May
The decline in retail sales in the Czech Republic continued in May. However, the annual drop of 6.1 percent in May is a slightly better result than the 8.4 percent indicator in April, the Czech Statistical Office announced on Monday in Prague.
The statisticians drew attention to the fact that the decline in retail trade has been continuous for 13 months in the Czech Republic. In a monthly comparison, however, an increase of 0.5 percent was shown in May compared to April.
The turnover of manufactured goods generally fell by 9.4 percent compared to last May, and that of food by 6.4 percent. On the other hand, the turnover of fuels increased by 11.5 percent annually – Jana Gotvaldová, the director of the statistical office, pointed out at a press conference.
The turnover of household goods decreased by 16.2 percent, and that of clothing and footwear by 14.2 percent in one year. The decrease in turnover was more moderate in sports equipment (7.2 percent) and in drugstores (2.6 percent). There was a moderate increase in computers and communication equipment (2.6 percent) and pharmacies (1.4 percent).
