The number of foreign tourists in Romania increased by 7 percent in May compared to the previous year
The number of foreign tourists in Romania increased by 7 percent in May compared to the previous year, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) announced on Friday.
In May, 239,400 foreigners spent at least one night in official accommodation, compared to 223,700 a year earlier. The number of foreign guest nights increased by 7.1 percent, from 460,400 to 492,900.
In the first five months of the year, 862,300 foreign tourists arrived in Romania, 5 percent more than in the same period in 2024. The number of foreign guest nights increased by 4.9 percent to 1.847 million.
Hungary rose to sixth place in the ranking of countries of origin, overtaking France. According to INS data, 39,925 Hungarian tourists spent at least one night in Romania between January 1 and May 31. The largest number of foreigners came from Italy (87,357 people), Germany (77,775) and Israel (60,487).
In May, the number of domestic tourists increased by 1.9 percent to 880,400, while domestic guest nights increased by 6.5 percent to 1.762 million. Overall, the number of tourists increased by 3 percent and guest nights by 6.6 percent, to 1.119 and 2.255 million, respectively.
In the first five months of the year, the number of guests in tourist accommodation establishments in Romania increased by 0.8 percent to 4.491 million, while guest nights increased by 3.1 percent to 8.774 million. The number of domestic tourists decreased by 0.2 percent to 3.628 million, while the number of domestic guest nights increased by 2.6 percent to 6.897 million.
