Hungary is a net exporter of both frozen and fresh cherries

According to KSH data, Hungary’s cherry crop ranged between 60.5 and 83.5 thousand tons between 2018 and 2022. According to KSH data, the cherry crop in 2023 decreased by 18 percent to 54,000 tons compared to the previous year. According to experts, the harvest in 2024 will be below average, like in 2023, between 50,000 and 57,000 tons.

Hungary is the world’s largest exporter of fresh cherries. According to KSH data, the foreign trade surplus was 4.64 thousand tons in 2023: 6.19 thousand tons of exports were compared to 1.54 thousand tons of imports. The fresh cherries mainly came from Poland, and Germany was the main target market for exports. Hungary is also a net exporter of frozen cherries, with a foreign trade surplus of 2.59 thousand tons in 2023: exports amounted to 3.46 thousand tons, imports to 872 tons. In the first four months of this year, the export of frozen cherries decreased by 9 percent to 1.04 thousand tons compared to the same period of the previous year. 41 percent more (491.4 tons) of frozen cherries were delivered to Belgium, while the quantity delivered to Germany decreased from 365 tons to 20.7 tons. Hungary was a net exporter of canned cherries and cherries in 2023, the foreign trade surplus amounted to 27.3 thousand tons: exports reached 28.7 thousand tons, compared to imports significantly less (1.36 thousand tons). The export of canned cherries decreased by 33 percent to 7.17 thousand tons between January and April 2024. More than half of the volume, 4.09 thousand tons, was sent to the largest target market, Germany.

According to the data of AKI PÁIR, domestic cherries appeared on the Budapest Wholesale Market in the 20th week at a price of HUF 2,500/kilogram. The producer price of cherries was HUF 769/kilogram 23–26, 2024. per week, which is 29 percent lower than in the same period of the previous year.
