Hungary is one of the largest honey producer in the European Union
Bee density is the highest in Hungary among the countries of the European Union: in 2010, 1 million, in 2012, 1.2 million bee colonies were recorded, so the density of bee families is more than 11 families per square kilometer – the Ministry of Rural Development (VM) told MTI on Friday.
The Communication states that the Hungarian apiary reached 1 percent of the gross agricultural production value; about 22.3 billion HUF last year. It is about 3 percent of livestock production.
The beekeeping industry is currently the additional or main source income to about 18 – 20 thousand families. Thus indirectly contributes to the population retaining ability of the countryside. (MTI)
