Prices of Hungarian products in Denmark: surprising differences between domestic and foreign prices
Food prices in Hungary continue to rise sharply, so more and more attention is being paid to foreign prices – especially when it comes to Hungarian products. A TikToker, bojtoslili, recently made a video in a Danish Lidl, in which she showed how much Hungarian food can be found in a Nordic country. When the prices are converted to forints, there are surprising differences – Pénzcentrum points out.

What do the shelves of a Danish Lidl show?
The video maker visited the store during a “Balkan Weeks” sale, so many Central and Eastern European products, including Hungarian food, were on offer. Below are the prices of some well-known Hungarian brands and private label products in Denmark:
150 g Gallicoop cold cuts – 538 HUF
500 g Gallicoop Parisian – 646 HUF
200 g szotyi (Mogyi private label) – 538 HUF
1 kg frozen plum dumplings (private label) – 1345 HUF
400 ml canned goulash (private label) – 807 HUF
1 kg seasoning delicata (private label) – 1076 HUF
160 g paprika paste (private label) – 646 HUF
410 g csalamade (private label) – 807 HUF
600 g frozen stuffed cabbage (private label) – 1345 HUF
1 kg frozen meatballs (private label) – 3712 HUF
How do these prices compare to domestic conditions?
When calculating Danish prices, it can be observed that the prices of some products hardly differ from the Hungarian price level, while others are significantly more expensive. However, this does not necessarily mean that all food costs more in Denmark: there may be several factors behind the price differences, for example:
Taxation: In Denmark, the general sales tax on food may be higher than in Hungary.
Wage levels: Wages are also significantly higher in the Nordic countries, which affects prices.
Shipping costs: There are extra costs involved in delivering Hungarian products to Denmark.
Supply and demand: Some Hungarian products may be rare in another market, which can also affect prices.
What can we learn from the price differences?
It is particularly interesting for Hungarian buyers to see that some products may even be cheaper abroad than at home, despite the fact that they reach the given country through a long supply chain. The differences point to domestic inflation processes and the specificities of the Hungarian market.
