Hungarian researchers’ findings shape the future of autonomous vehicles and robotics
The Autonomous Systems National Laboratory (ARNL) research and development program, which has been investigating the safe, fast and sustainable operation of autonomous vehicles, robots and drones – operating without human intervention – for more than four years, has been completed. The project, implemented with a 6.2 billion HUF grant from the European Union, aimed to make future transportation and industrial systems more reliable, more energy-efficient and safer for everyone.
The program, which launched in the fall of 2021, resulted in technological solutions that help self-driving vehicles and robots respond faster to unexpected situations, sense their environment more accurately and use energy more efficiently. These developments can contribute to reducing the number of traffic accidents, reducing harmful emissions, and increasing the competitiveness of the automotive industry and robotics.
The impact of the research is significant not only from a scientific but also from a social and economic perspective. During its operation, ARNL has achieved a total revenue of more than 9 billion forints. As a result of the program, 13 domestic patents and trademarks and 4 international patents have been filed so far, and the establishment of 3 spin-off companies has been supported, which utilize the knowledge generated in the laboratory in practice.
The project was implemented within the framework of the RRF-2.3.1-2021 “Establishment and complex development of a National Laboratory”. Three key institutions – HUN-REN SZTAKI, Széchenyi István University and Budapest University of Technology and Economics – participated in the work, with the participation of nearly four hundred researchers and technicians. “The Autonomous Systems National Laboratory was a true community achievement. A research collaboration was established that brought tangible technological results and creates a strong foundation for domestic autonomous vehicle and robotics developments in the long term” – said Péter Gáspár, head of the HUN-REN SZTAKI Systems and Control Theory Research Laboratory, which provides professional leadership for ARNL.
