Hungarian Obesity Science Society: Overweight patients cost 207 billion HUF for the budget every year
Obesity is a common disease in Hungary. According to the latest OECD report, Hungarians are Europe’s most obese nation and fourth most obese in the world; 30 percent of people over the age of 15 are obese.
The Hungarian Obesity Science Society (MET) consists of researchers and doctors, has set a goal to prevent obesity and again draws attention to the significance of prevention on the occasion of the International World Obesity Day. In terms of social security expenditure, according to the OEP 2012 data, the direct cost of obesity and overweight patients was 207 billion HUF, which is 11.6 percent of the total health care expenditure and 0.73 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).
