Economic relations between Germany and Hungary run smoothly
Germany is one of Hungary’s most important economic partners when it comes to food trade. With its 80 million consumers, the German food market is the biggest in Europe. The sector is the fourth biggest in Germany with 6,000 companies employing 580,000 people. Almost 79 percent of Germany’s food export targets EU member states. Hungary’s share from Germany’s total food export is a bit more than 1 percent. According to the German statistical office (Destatis), in 2016 we mostly bought milk and dairy products, meat industry products, cereal products and baked goods from Germany. Cocoa and cocoa-based products are also important in our German import.
The German-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DUIHK) has been representing the interests of the German economy in Hungary since 1993. DUIHK has approximately 900 companies and institutions as members. Deputy managing director and head of the business development department Ilona Balogh told our magazine that their experts give advice to German and Hungarian companies on everything, from finding new business partners to trade fair participation and legal matters.
Germany is the country of trade fairs: every year about 180 trade shows welcome 180,000 exhibitors and almost 10 million visitors from all over the world. Some of the most important ones are Anuga (Cologne), BIOFACH (Nuremberg), FRUIT LOGISTICA (Berlin) and Internationale Grüne Woche (Berlin). DUIHK is the representative of Nuremberg and Berlin trade fairs in Hungary.
