Menu cards and drink lists show what is on offer and help guests decide what to order. Austrian daily Der Standard asked readers: Why do waiters take menu cards away right after ordering? Some readers said because this way guests cannot check prices when paying. Restaurant owners’ explanations: 1. they don’t have enough menu cards, 2. doing this is part of the classic restaurant ritual.
