Magazine: It is garden designing time!

We have been using the term garden or terrace in connection with restaurants for quite a long time, but let’s admit that these places hardly resembled gardens. Now the latest trend is that these exterior spaces of restaurants are designed by architects and garden designers in cooperation. Their philosophy is that these exteriors work as a constantly changing background to meals. They treat gardens as the extension of the restaurant’s interior and don’t think of them as classic terraces: they create a new room or rooms

which are organically integrated into the space of the restaurant. When we talk about garden design, it isn’t enough to focus on plants as other, preferably modern materials and solutions also have to be used for space dividing and shading purposes. Not only wood and stone are used but metal and plastic – sometimes even water! – as well. Modern restaurant exteriors belong more to the interior than to the space outside the restaurant. The ‘walls’ that separate them from the outside world give guests the security of being inside. This sense of security is enhanced further by expanding in a circular shape – something which designers tend to like very much.
