Magazine: Cross of merit
On 20 August Gyula Berkes, vice president of the Guild of Hungarian Restaurateurs (MVI) was decorated with the Hungarian Bronze Cross of Merit. Mr Berkes has been the owner of the restaurant Biarritz for 20 years. He told our magazine that the place’s interior has been redesigned lately; as for its cuisine, Biarritz is basically a bistro-style restaurant – not in the Hungarian but in the French sense of the word. They serve simple but sophisticated dishes, in 80 percent made from Hungarian ingredients. MVI’s vice president added that he has been the guild’s member for 15 years, lobbying for the profession 1-2 hours every day. He played an important role in the guild’s restructuring 5 years ago and he is satisfied with the results: progress has been made in many fields and work in MVI has become more creative, e.g. study trips and a ball is organised, a prestigious award programme was established. When asked about the best restaurants, he mentioned Bock Bistro, Arany Kaviár, Kistücsök, Haxen, Onix and Costes, adding that many others also do an excellent job.
