In the early 20th century there were nearly 500 cafés in Budapest. Today’s confectioneries developed from these coffee houses. Habits have changed since then and the rapid pace of life in the 21st century hardly leaves enough time for people to go to confectioneries on ordinary weekdays. We most frequently visit confectioner’s shops if there is some kind of special occasion, a family event or a special cause for celebration. Unfortunately we also have to admit that in general the selection of sweets in confectioneries is boring and lacking in creativity – cakes and biscuits are still full of butter and sugar, they are difficult to digest. When we look at the interior of shops we get the feeling that time has stopped. Luckily, a new generation of confectioners seems to bring changes. These pioneering confectioners follow the French school, they only use fresh, top quality ingredients (e.g. real fruit, first-class chocolate, premium quality butter) and their goal is to reform the Hungarian confectioner trade, in terms of both quality and products offered. When we speak about top confectioneries the 150-year-old Ruszwurm in Buda, the Auguszt and Szamos shops (named after two great confectioner families) come to our mind: they are still popular and they never disappoint us.
