What to do? Shall I clean up? – asked János Szakál, owner-manager of Sz. Variáns, to his acquaintance when he learned that three employees of the Swedish furniture giant, IKEA, visited him personally back in the 1990s.
Of course, the answer came to the question: Let there be order and work in the plant, let the machines work. And how did the story end? 4 years after its establishment, Sz. Variáns already manufactured the micro-ribbed oval boxes for 54 IKEA stores. At that time, in the “glass cage office” created from a 70 square meter industrial kitchen with a damp, bituminous, pitched floor, they didn’t even dare to dream that one day they would celebrate the 30th anniversary.
The dynamically developing family business, which now employs more than 70 people, has a turnover of close to HUF 2 billion, and you can find decorative packaging from Sz. Variáns all over Europe and overseas. They won the Hungaropack grand prize eight times, and in 2022 they also won the international WordStar Packaging Awards with the St. Andrea Szőlőbirtok gift box.
