Máté Lóga: tourism is the central element of economic policy
Tourism is a central element of economic policy, accounting for nearly 10 percent of GDP, and it should remain so – said the State Secretary of the Ministry of National Economy (NGM) responsible for economic strategy, industry, financial resources and macroeconomic analysis at the iCon BUDAPEST economic policy conference in Budapest on Friday.
At the discussion on Budapest as a tourist destination, Máté Lóga emphasized: the repurchase of Liszt Ferenc Airport was a decisive step that supports this, Budapest’s popularity is growing, and infrastructure is needed to receive as many tourists as possible.
He added: 17 million passengers are expected at Budapest Airport this year. The government’s task is to ensure the appropriate infrastructure, the development of the terminal is necessary, serious plans must be made in the coming months, and financiers must be found.
Regarding the planned regulation of short-term housing rentals, he said that this will be a trend not only in Hungary, but also in Europe.
According to Ráhel Orbán, head of BDPST Koncept, state involvement is also necessary in the sector because the tourism of regional competitors also receives state aid. Budapest stands well in the regional competition, its built environment has outstanding and varied accommodation options.
Its situation is also favorable in terms of restaurants, and there are many cultural service providers. However, in order to attract more scientific and business events, a congress center with a large capacity is needed – he believed, and expressed hope that business tourism could develop.
