Hungarian-Chinese agricultural relations are developing rapidly
Dr. Oszkár Ökrös, Deputy State Secretary for International Relations, received the Deputy Governor of the Chinese Jiangsu Province at the Ministry of Agriculture. During the meeting, the parties discussed current issues affecting the agricultural relations between Hungary and Jiangsu province. The Deputy Governor welcomed the fact that Hungary was the first in the European Union to join the Chinese One Belt One Road initiative, which creates an opportunity to exploit bilateral commercial and professional cooperation opportunities on a wider scale.
The parties discussed the situation of Hungarian agricultural exports in relation to China, the increase of Chinese imports, which currently amount to USD 6.5 million, and the possibility of expanding them with additional agricultural products. Although there is a great distance between our countries, seed export and plant breeding offer enormous opportunities to further strengthen our agricultural relations: We occupy an excellent position in seed cultivation in the world as well, because our country has the world’s 6th largest gene bank, through which we can provide practical answers to the challenges posed by a changing climate – drew the attention of his partner, Dr. Oszkár Ökrös. He also indicated that expert consultations are necessary to identify opportunities for cooperation in the field of water management, primarily irrigation. The goal of the Ministry of Agriculture is to spread the use of responsible water management as widely as possible, so that Hungarian farmers can flexibly adapt to the challenges caused by global climate change. Therefore, studying the advanced technology and good practices of other countries can provide significant help in achieving this goal.
