The Prajdi salt bath, whose water is mixed with imported salt, will reopen no later than July 1st.
The salt bath in Prajd will reopen no later than July 1st, which is expected to boost local tourism. The water of the beach – which previously came from the mine – will be mixed with salt from other production units of Salrom, said Nicolae Soltuz, the mining company’s investment director, at a press conference in Prajd on Wednesday.
Representatives of the authorities supervising the salt mine stressed at a press conference held on site: Prajd is safe, and they expect tourists to return to the Szeklerland settlement that was left without guests after the mine disaster.
Nicolae Soltuz, investment director of the National Salt Industry Company (Salrom), said: preparations are underway for the reopening of the beach, which will be no later than July 1st, but they hope it will happen earlier.
Since the pools have been supplied with salt water of appropriate saturation from the salt mine, after the mine disaster the high salt content water is replaced with fresh water, which is mixed with salt brought in bags from other Salrom mining units, until the salt content is reached that is familiar and preferred by visitors.
The director also reported on the diversion works of the Korond stream. He said that the schedule is being kept and thanks to this the emergency works will be completed by July 1st.
He said that the previous collapses in the old mine section have expanded slightly, but the water level in the mine shows that no new salt blocks have collapsed, which could lead to a new large amount of salt water entering Kis-Küküllő.
The salt concentration of the water flooding the mine is close to maximum saturation, almost 311 grams per liter, so it will not dissolve any more salt from the mine structure, he said.
He pointed out that during the stream diversion works, the salt water in the old bed caused an ecological problem on the Kis-Küküllő, as it flows into the river. The phenomenon is being monitored, and experts from the Disaster Prevention Inspectorate (ISU) and the water authority are using high-performance pumps and hoses to transfer the water from the upper section of the stream above the mine to the bed below the facility.
According to the director, the pipes that will lead the water of the Korond stream above the mine should be installed at the beginning of next week, so that it does not come into contact with the ground surface. The two-meter-diameter pipes will be attached to the hillside with an iron structure.
