Austria’s annual inflation rate eased to 4.0 percent in September, down from 4.1 percent in August. Services remained the main driver, while energy prices regained momentum.

According to preliminary data from the Austrian Statistical Office (STAT), annual consumer price inflation in September 2025 was 4.0 percent. This is a slight slowdown compared to the 4.1 percent recorded in August, which was the fastest rate of inflation since March last year.

According to the details, the 4.7 percent price increase in the services sector is maintaining inflationary pressure. In contrast, the price increase in food, tobacco and alcohol products cooled to 3.8 percent from 5.0 percent in August, while industrial product inflation fell from 2.2 percent to 1.4 percent.

The energy sector, however, made a turnaround: the 7.9 percent annual price increase in September significantly exceeds the 5.9 percent in August. Electricity prices continued to rise, but the decreasing effect of fuel prices has disappeared, highlighted Manuela Lenk, CEO of STAT.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell by 0.2 percent, compared to a 0.2 percent increase in August. The annual rate of the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), used for EU comparison, slowed to 3.9 percent, and stagnation followed on a monthly basis after a 0.3 percent increase in the summer.
