Chocolate Santas with Larvae in Schools – Investigation Launched in Several Towns

In the institutions concerned, state catering is provided by a municipal company. The unopened sweets were collected, and the company immediately filed a complaint with its supplier. According to the manufacturer, the products were within their warranty period, but an investigation was launched into the supply chain.

According to experts, the contamination indicates the presence of fly or mealybug larvae. Based on pest control experience, this typically occurs when the packaging is damaged during production or storage and the insects get into the sweets.

Following the RTL Híradó report, additional parents reported that in Tápiószentmárton, not only larvae but also moths were found in some chocolates. Based on the indications, official inspections are expected at several locations.

Several of the children complained of feeling unwell, however, a serious health risk is unlikely – said doctor András Késmárky. The unpleasant sight and feeling of disgust may cause nausea, but swallowing the larvae itself does not usually have serious consequences.

The results of the tests will determine at which point in the supply chain contamination entered and whether a larger-scale product recall will be necessary. Retail chains and the food safety authority are also following the case with special attention as the holiday season approaches, when sales of seasonal sweets spike.
