Special Hungarian tomato seedlings on the shelves of Lidl
From tomorrow, the Hungarian landscape variety, organic tomato seedlings of the Ecological Agricultural Research Institute will be available in the Lidl Hungary store network. The special Cegléd, Fadd, Máriapócs, and Tolna landscape variety seedlings can be purchased seasonally, which were grown under organic conditions, have excellent adaptability and are of high quality. The discount chain has been cooperating with the Research Institute for the 5th year now, with the aim of contributing to the rise of domestic varieties and the promotion of sustainable farming.
Landscape varieties are diverse plant varieties created over a long period of time through natural and human selection. Over the centuries, they have adapted excellently to the features of the domestic “landscape”, thanks to their diversity, they have outstanding adaptability, making them more resistant. For 5 years, the Ecological Agricultural Research Institute investigated which Hungarian landscape varieties of tomatoes can best be grown using ecological methods. In 2017, it launched the promotion of the best local varieties of tomatoes as a result of research, which was joined by Lidl Hungary two years later, thereby supporting the nationwide expansion of the campaign.
By growing domestic landscape varieties, we can also contribute to increasing agricultural diversity and protecting biodiversity.
“Lidl is committed to the preservation of domestic values and our natural resources, which is why we were happy to join the ÖMKi program. In the framework of the cooperation, we have previously offered our customers alakor and tönke primordial grain flour, and since 2019 landscape tomato seedlings, which will be available in Lidl stores from May 4 this year.”
– said Judit Tőssér, Lidl’s corporate communications manager.
