KSH: the foreign trade surplus in goods was 713 million euros in October; the volume of exports was 3.1 percent lower, and that of imports was 1.1 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year

In October, the surplus in foreign trade was 713 million euros, the balance deteriorated by 178 million euros compared to a year earlier. The volume of exports was 3.1 percent lower and that of imports was 1.1 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Monday.

The seasonally and working day-adjusted volume of exports was 1.4 percent lower and that of imports was 3.6 percent lower than in September.

In October, the value of exports was 12.8 billion euros (5,010 billion forints), while that of imports was 12.1 billion euros (4,732 billion forints). Compared to the same period a year earlier, the value of exports decreased by 0.9 percent in euros, while imports increased by 0.6 percent.

Adjusted for calendar effects, the volume of exports decreased by 3.6 percent, while imports decreased by 0.7 percent.

The price level of foreign trade turnover measured in forints decreased by 0.6 percent in exports and 3.5 percent in imports compared to the same month of the previous year. The terms of trade improved by 3.0 percent. The forint exchange rate strengthened by 2.9 percent against the euro and by 9.0 percent against the dollar.

According to the Central Statistical Office report, the export volume of machinery and transport equipment decreased by 2.6 percent, while its import volume increased by 6.4 percent. The main commodity group of machinery and transport equipment increased the decrease in total export volume by 1.5 percentage points on the export side, and increased the increase in total import volume by 2.9 percentage points on the import side.

The export volume of processed products decreased by 6.2 percent, while its import volume decreased by 6.6 percent. The main commodity group of processed products accelerated the decrease in the volume of total exports by 1.8 percentage points in exports, and restrained the increase in the volume of total imports by 2.5 percentage points in imports.

The export volume of energy carriers was 20 percent higher, and their import volume was 5.1 percent higher than a year earlier. The expansion of energy carriers’ turnover on the export side offset the decrease in the volume of total exports by 0.6 percentage points, and on the import side strengthened the increase in the volume of total imports by 0.4 percentage points.

The volume of exports of food, beverages, and tobacco decreased by 5.4 percent, and that of imports increased by 5.6 percent. The volume change realized by the main commodity group accelerated the volume decrease of total turnover in exports by 0.4 percentage points, and strengthened the volume increase of total turnover in imports by the same amount.

In terms of territorial breakdown, the volume of exports to EU member states decreased by 3.7 percent, and imports from there by 3.4 percent. The foreign trade balance of products deteriorated by 53 million euros compared to the balance in October 2024, resulting in a surplus of 1,063 million euros. The country accounted for 75 percent of exports and 71 percent of imports in this period.

In trade with countries outside the EU, the volume of exports decreased by 4.0 percent, while imports increased by 10 percent. The balance of trade in goods deteriorated by 126 million euros in this period, showing a deficit of 351 million euros.

In January-October, the value of exports was 123 billion euros (49,364 billion forints), while imports were 115 billion euros (45,945 billion forints). Compared to the previous year, the volume of exports decreased by 0.3 percent, while imports increased by 2.0 percent. The foreign trade balance of goods improved by 555 million euros, with a surplus of 8.5 billion euros.

The price level of foreign trade goods in forints increased by 3.7 percent in exports and 1.0 percent in imports compared to the same period of the previous year. The terms of trade improved by 2.7 percent. The forint weakened by 2.1 percent against the euro and strengthened by 0.9 percent against the dollar, the Central Statistical Office announced.
