KSH: in March, the number of guests was 1.1 percent lower and guest nights were 5.9 percent lower than a year earlier

In March 2025, 1.1 million guests spent nearly 2.7 million guest nights in tourist accommodation (commercial, private and other). Due to Good Friday and Easter, which fall entirely in April this year, and the holiday on March 15th that is not related to the long weekend, the number of guests in March was 1.1 percent lower and guest nights were 5.9 percent lower than a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Tuesday.

In January–March 2025, the number of domestic guests arriving at tourist accommodation was 0.7 percent higher, while that of foreign guests was 16 percent higher than the same period of the previous year.

In March, based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of guests increased by 8.4 percent and guest nights by 5.6 percent compared to March 2024. 73 percent of guests arrived at commercial accommodation, where their number did not change compared to the previous year. Private and other accommodation registered 4.0 percent fewer guests than a year earlier.

The number of domestic guests was 7.6 percent, and the number of guest nights they spent was 13 percent less than the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of domestic guests increased by 4.5 percent, and the number of guest nights they spent by 0.9 percent compared to March 2024.

The 548 thousand domestic guests spent nearly 1.2 million guest nights in tourist accommodation, within which 419 thousand guests and 885 thousand guest nights were registered in commercial accommodation. 83 percent of the latter guests were received by hotels, where their number did not change compared to a year earlier. The number of domestic guests in private and other accommodation fell by 19 percent compared to March 2024.

The number of domestic guests decreased in all tourist regions compared to the same month of the previous year, with the largest decrease in the Sopron-Fertő region (by 23 percent). The number of domestic guests arriving at tourist accommodations was 9.6 percent higher in Budapest and 8.1 percent lower at Lake Balaton, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) announced.

The number of foreign guests increased by 5.6 percent, and the number of guest nights spent by them increased by 0.7 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of foreign guests increased by 23 percent, and the number of guest nights spent by them increased by 16 percent compared to March 2024.

The 601 thousand foreign guests arriving at tourist accommodations spent 1.5 million guest nights, of which 416 thousand guests and approximately 1.1 million guest nights were registered in commercial accommodations. 87 percent of the latter guests were received by hotels, where their number was 3.4 percent higher than a year earlier. The number of foreign guests in private and other accommodation establishments exceeded March 2024 by 10 percent.
