KSH: in May, consumer prices exceeded the values of the same month of the previous year by an average of 4.4 percent
In May 2025, consumer prices were 4.4 percent higher than a year earlier. Compared to April, prices increased by 0.2 percent on average, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Wednesday.
Food prices increased by 5.9 percent in 12 months, 4.5 percent excluding catering services. Within this, eggs increased by 26.0 percent, cooking oil by 25.3 percent, flour by 25.0 percent, coffee by 22.5 percent, chocolate and cocoa by 22.3 percent, fruit and vegetable juices by 14.1 percent, snack foods by 10.6 percent, non-alcoholic soft drinks by 8.4 percent, milk by 7.3 percent, and bread by 6.9 percent. Within the product group, the price of margarine decreased by 30.0 percent, that of dairy products by 7.4 percent, that of sausages and sausages by 7.3 percent, and that of pork by 1.6 percent.
Services increased by 5.9 percent, including postal services by 11.3 percent, rent by 10.4 percent, vehicle repair and maintenance and home repair and maintenance by 9.9 percent, and holiday services by 8.5 percent.
The price of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products increased by 7.3 percent, including tobacco products by 7.9 percent.
According to the report, household energy costs increased by 5.3 percent on average, including piped gas by 11.4 percent and bottled gas by 6.8 percent.
The price of durable consumer goods increased by 2.2 percent, of which jewelry increased by 22.7 percent, room furniture by 4.1 percent, new passenger cars by 4.0 percent, and used passenger cars by 0.8 percent.
The price of vehicle fuels decreased by 4.8 percent, and pharmaceuticals and medical supplies increased by 5.4 percent year-on-year.
In one month, compared to April, consumer prices increased by an average of 0.2 percent. The price of food increased by 0.6 percent (0.6 percent even without catering services), which was determined by the 1.6 percent average price increase of seasonal foods (potatoes, fresh vegetables, fresh domestic and tropical fruits). Chocolate and cocoa increased in price by 2.6 percent, coffee by 1.8 percent, snack foods by 1.2 percent, pork by 1.0 percent, and flour by 0.9 percent. Within the product group, eggs cost 2.5 percent, margarine by 2.2 percent, and milk by 0.9 percent less.
