KSH: retail turnover in June exceeded the same period of the previous year by 3.0 percent and the previous month by 0.5 percent

In June 2025, the volume of retail sales increased by 3.0% compared to the same period of the previous year, both according to raw data and data adjusted for calendar effects – reported the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) on Wednesday.

Sales volume – adjusted for calendar effects – increased by 3.7% in food and grocery stores, by 3.9% in non-food retail, and by 2.5% in fuel retail compared to the same period of the previous year.

According to seasonally and calendar-adjusted data, the volume of retail sales increased by 0.5% compared to the previous month.

In food and grocery retail, the volume of sales rose by 3.7%. Sales volume at grocery stores – which account for 76% of food retail – grew by 4.9%, while sales at food, beverage, and tobacco specialist stores remained essentially unchanged.

The volume of non-food retail sales increased overall by 3.9%. Sales volume rose by 8.3% in general merchandise stores, by 4.8% in pharmaceutical and personal care stores, and by 3.5% in furniture and consumer electronics stores.

At the same time, sales volume declined by 1.3% in textile, clothing and footwear stores, and in book, IT and other specialized stores, and by 5.1% in second-hand goods stores.

The report also highlights that parcel delivery and internet retail – accounting for 8.3% of total retail sales – saw a 9.2% increase in volume.

The volume of sales at motor vehicle and vehicle parts stores – which are not included in general retail data – increased by 2.5%.

In June, the value of national retail turnover at current prices reached HUF 1,702 billion, according to the HCSO.

The report also reveals that 49% of national retail sales were realized in food and grocery stores, 36% in non-food retail, and 15% at fuel stations.

From January to June, the volume of retail sales – adjusted for calendar effects – increased by 3.1% compared to the same period of the previous year.
