KSH: in January, the number of guests increased by 5.3 percent and guest nights by 3.6 percent compared to a year earlier

In January 2026, nearly 1.1 million guests spent approximately 2.4 million guest nights in tourist accommodation (commercial, private and other). The number of guests was 5.3 percent higher and the number of guest nights was 3.6 percent higher than a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) announced on Thursday.

The number of domestic guests exceeded January 2025 by 4.6 percent, and that of foreign guests by 6.0 percent.

In January, based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of guests increased by 4.0 percent, and that of guest nights by 2.7 percent compared to January 2025. 74 percent of guests arrived at commercial accommodations, where their number increased by 6.9 percent compared to the previous year. Private and other accommodation registered 1.2 percent more guests than a year earlier.

The Central Statistical Office (KSH) announced that in January the number of domestic guests was 4.6 percent higher, and the number of guest nights they spent was 2.5 percent higher than in the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of domestic guests increased by 3.4 percent, and the number of guest nights they spent by 1.9 percent compared to January 2025. The 494 thousand domestic guests spent 1.0 million guest nights in tourist accommodation, of which 388 thousand guests and 804 thousand guest nights were registered in commercial accommodation. 87 percent of the latter guests were received by hotels, where their number increased by 6.2 percent compared to a year earlier.

The number of domestic guests in private and other accommodation facilities exceeded that of January 2025 by 3.8 percent. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of domestic guests increased the most in the Pécs-Villány tourist region (by 21 percent), and decreased the most in the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza regions (by 3.9 percent). The number of domestic guests arriving at tourist accommodations was 11 percent higher in Budapest and 3.4 percent higher at Lake Balaton.

The number of foreign guests increased by 6.0, and the number of guest nights spent by them increased by 4.4 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of foreign guests increased by 5.8 percent and the number of guest nights spent by them increased by 4.1 percent compared to January 2025. The 573 thousand foreign guests who arrived at tourist accommodations spent 1.3 million guest nights, of which 396 thousand guests and 949 thousand guest nights were registered at commercial accommodations. 87 percent of the latter guests were received by hotels, where their number was 6.4 percent higher than a year earlier.

The number of foreign guests in private and other accommodations fell by 0.4 percent compared to January 2025. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of foreign guests increased the most in the Budapest area (by 22 percent), and decreased the most in Gyula and its surroundings (by 23 percent). The number of foreign guests arriving at tourist accommodations was 7.8 percent higher in Budapest and 7.3 percent higher at Lake Balaton.

According to the report, a total of 20,367 tourist accommodations, including 2,088 commercial and 18,279 private and other accommodations, welcomed guests. Of the commercial accommodations, 924 hotels and 857 guesthouses were open in part or all of January.

The total gross sales revenue of tourist accommodations was 66.4 billion forints, 8.0 percent more at current prices than a year earlier.

With the Széchenyi Holiday Card, cardholders spent 2.1 billion forints, 4.5 percent less at current prices, at tourist accommodations compared to the same month of the previous year – the Central Statistical Office announced.
