Hungarian Central Statistical Office: retail turnover in January exceeded the same period of the previous year by 4.7 percent and the previous month by 2.2 percent
In January 2025, the volume of retail trade turnover, both in raw and calendar-adjusted data, exceeded the same period of the previous year by 4.7 percent. The volume of sales adjusted for calendar effects increased by 4.7 percent in food and food-related mixed stores, 5.6 percent in non-food retail, and 1.9 percent in fuel retail compared to the same period of the previous year, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Thursday.
According to seasonally and calendar-adjusted data, the volume of retail trade turnover exceeded the previous month by 2.2 percent.
In January 2025, compared to the same period of the previous year, adjusted for calendar effects, within the 4.7 percent increase in the turnover of food and food-related mixed retail trade, the sales volume of food-related mixed stores, which account for 76 percent of food retail trade, increased by 5.1 percent, and that of food, beverage, and tobacco specialty stores by 3.2 percent.
Among the components of non-food retail trade turnover, turnover increased by 9.7 percent in pharmaceutical, medical product, and perfume stores, 7.8 percent in furniture, technical goods stores, 6.7 percent in industrial goods mixed stores, 4.7 percent in textile, clothing, and footwear stores, 2.9 percent in second-hand goods stores, and 0.3 percent in book, computer, and other industrial goods stores.
The volume of mail-order and online retail, which covers a wide range of goods and accounts for 8.8 percent of retail sales, increased by 3.9 percent.
Sales of motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts stores, which are not included in retail data, increased by 19 percent.
In January, national retail sales reached HUF 1,477 billion at current prices.
