KSH: in December, the number of guests (1.4 million) increased by 12 percent, and guest nights (3.2 million) by 9.2 percent, compared to a year earlier

In December 2025, 1.4 million guests spent 3.2 million guest nights in tourist accommodation (commercial, private and other). The number of guests was 12 percent higher and the number of guest nights was 9.2 percent higher than a year earlier. In January-December 2025, the number of domestic guests arriving at tourist accommodations was 3.2, while the number of foreign guests exceeded the previous year by 12 percent, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Wednesday.

The 604 thousand domestic guests spent nearly 1.3 million guest nights in tourist accommodations, of which 466 thousand guests and 1.0 million guest nights were registered in commercial accommodations. 85 percent of the latter guests were received by hotels, where their number increased by 12 percent compared to a year earlier. The number of domestic guests in private and other accommodation facilities increased by 7.9 percent compared to December 2024.

According to the KSH report, the number of domestic guests increased in all tourist regions compared to the same month of the previous year, with the largest increase in Pécs-Villányi (24 percent). The number of domestic guests arriving at tourist accommodations was 11 percent higher in Budapest and 12 percent higher at Lake Balaton.

The number of foreign guests increased by 13 percent, and the number of guest nights spent by them increased by 11 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of foreign guests increased by 11 percent, and the number of guest nights spent by them increased by 8.9 percent compared to December 2024. The 819 thousand foreign guests who arrived at tourist accommodations spent nearly 2.0 million guest nights, of which 527 thousand guests and approximately 1.3 million guest nights were registered at commercial accommodations. 87 percent of the latter guests were received by hotels, where their number was 8.4 percent higher than a year earlier. The number of foreign guests in private and other accommodations exceeded that of December 2024 by 17 percent.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of foreign guests increased the most in the Budapest area tourist region (25 percent), and decreased the most in Gyula and its region (7.3 percent). The number of foreign guests arriving at tourist accommodations was 14 percent higher in Budapest and 18 percent higher at Lake Balaton.

The report states that a total of 22,889 tourist accommodations, including 2,130 commercial and 20,759 private and other accommodations, welcomed guests. Of the commercial accommodations, 931 hotels and 882 guesthouses were open in part or all of December.

The Central Statistical Office highlighted:

The total gross sales revenue at tourist accommodations was 103.9 billion forints, 14 percent more at current prices than a year earlier. With the Széchenyi Holiday Card, cardholders spent 13 percent more, or 3.0 billion forints, at current prices at tourist accommodations compared to the same month of the previous year.

In January-December 2025, 7.3 percent more guests were registered at tourist accommodations compared to the same period of the previous year, totaling 19.5 million. The number of domestic guests was 3.2 percent more, and that of foreign guests was 12 percent more (nearly 9.7 and about 9.9 million, respectively) at tourist accommodations, the Central Statistical Office reported.
