KSH: The volume of exports of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 6.8 percent, while imports increased by 9.8 percent

In December, the trade balance surplus was 333 million euros, a decrease of 28 million euros compared to a year earlier. The volume of exports was 3.8 percent higher and imports were 7.9 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year. The seasonally and working day-adjusted volume of exports increased by 1.3 percent, while imports decreased by 6.1 percent compared to November 2025, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Thursday.

In December, the value of exports was 10.8 billion euros (4,158 billion forints), while imports were 10.5 billion euros (4,029 billion forints). Expressed in euros, the value of exports increased by 6.0 percent and imports by 6.5 percent compared to the same period a year earlier.

Adjusted for calendar effects, the volume of exports increased by 0.8 percent and imports by 5.0 percent.

The price level of foreign trade turnover measured in forints decreased by 4.6 percent in exports and 7.8 percent in imports compared to the same month of the previous year. The terms of trade improved by 3.5 percent. The forint exchange rate strengthened by 6.6 percent against the euro and by 16 percent against the dollar, the Central Statistical Office reported.

As detailed in the report: the export volume of machinery and transport equipment increased by 5.1 percent, and its import volume by 10 percent. The main commodity group of machinery and transport equipment increased the volume growth of total exports by 2.8 percentage points on the export side, and strengthened the volume growth of total imports by 4.5 percentage points on the import side.

The export volume of processed products increased by 2.2 percent, and its import volume by 4.2 percent. The main commodity group of processed products accelerated the volume growth of total exports by 0.6 percentage points in exports, and increased the volume growth of total imports by 1.4 percentage points in imports.

The export volume of energy carriers was 9.1 percent lower, and their import was 6.2 percent higher than a year earlier. The change in the turnover of energy carriers slowed down the volume growth of total exports by 0.6 percentage points on the export side, and strengthened the volume growth of total imports by 0.8 percentage points on the import side.

The volume of exports of food, beverages, tobacco increased by 6.8 percent, and that of imports by 9.8 percent. The volume change realized by the main commodity group accelerated the volume expansion of total turnover in exports by 0.5 percentage points, and strengthened the volume growth of total turnover in imports by 0.7 percentage points.

Regarding the direction of turnover, the Central Statistical Office announced: the volume of exports to EU member states increased by 0.2 percent, while imports from there decreased by 2.0 percent. The foreign trade balance of products improved by 101 million euros compared to the balance in December 2024, resulting in a surplus of 522 million euros. We carried out 72 percent of exports and 70 percent of imports in this relationship. In trade with countries outside the EU, the volume of exports increased by 7.7 percent and that of imports by 23 percent. The foreign trade balance of goods deteriorated by 129 million euros in this respect, showing a deficit of 189 million euros.

Over the whole of last year, the value of exports was 147 billion euros (58,413 billion forints), while imports were 139 billion euros (55,111 billion forints). The volume of exports decreased by 0.5 percent, while imports increased by 2.8 percent in January-December 2025 compared to the previous year. The foreign trade balance of goods deteriorated by 439 million euros, with a surplus of 8.2 billion euros.

The price level of foreign trade goods measured in forints increased by 2.7 percent in exports last year, while imports decreased by 0.2 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. The terms of trade improved by 2.9 percent. The forint weakened by 0.7 percent against the euro and strengthened by 3.3 percent against the dollar, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) announced.
