KSH: industrial production decreased by 2.6 percent compared to a year earlier and by 1.3 percent compared to the previous month in May
In May 2025, the volume of industrial production fell by 2.6 percent from a year earlier. The index adjusted for working day effects is the same as the unadjusted one, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) confirmed in its second estimate released on Tuesday.
A decline occurred in the vast majority of manufacturing sub-sectors, but production volume increased in the largest vehicle manufacturing sector, as well as in the manufacturing of computer, electronic and optical products.
Based on seasonally and working day adjusted data, industrial output was 1.3 percent lower than in April 2025.
The volume of industrial exports was 0.7 percent higher than a year earlier. Vehicle manufacturing, which represents 33 percent of manufacturing export sales, increased by 3.7 percent, and computer, electronic and optical product manufacturing, which accounts for 13 percent, increased by 1.9 percent.
Domestic sales of industry decreased by 8.0 percent, and those of manufacturing decreased by 9.0 percent compared to the same month of the previous year.
The production of the manufacturing industry, which represents the dominant (96 percent) weight within industry, decreased by 2.7 percent, and the output of mining, which has a minor weight, decreased by 7.4 percent, while the production of the energy industry (electricity, gas, steam supply, air conditioning) expanded by 6.9 percent.
The volume of vehicle production, which has the largest weight and represents 27 percent of manufacturing industry production, increased by 6.0 percent in May compared to the same month of the previous year. The production of road vehicles increased by 9.4 percent, and the production of road vehicle components by 1.4 percent.
The production of computer, electronic, and optical products, which accounts for 9.9 percent of manufacturing industry production, exceeded the level of last May by 1.1 percent. In terms of the two largest sub-sectors, the production of electronic components and circuit boards increased by 5.5 percent, while the production of computers and peripheral units decreased by 4.4 percent.
The production of electrical equipment, which accounts for 9.5 percent of the manufacturing industry, fell by 4.8 percent compared to the previous year. Of the two largest sub-sectors, the volume of battery and dry cell production increased by 3.0 percent, while that of electric motors, generators, distributors and regulators decreased by 8.8 percent.
The production of food, beverages and tobacco products, which accounts for 13 percent of the manufacturing industry, decreased by 6.0 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, with both domestic and foreign sales declining. The production of meat processing, preservation and meat products, which accounts for the largest share (23 percent), decreased by 2.1 percent compared to May of the previous year. Production also decreased in five sub-sectors, by between 2.2 and 43 percent, most notably in the production of vegetable and animal oils. Output increased in the other five sub-sectors, most significantly in the production of tobacco products, which is considered to have a low weight, by 41 percent, and least significantly in the production of other food products, by 2.2 percent – the Central Statistical Office reported.
Of the two medium-weight sub-sectors, the production of rubber, plastic and non-metallic mineral products was 4.9 percent lower, and the production of metal raw materials and metal processing products was 7.7 percent lower compared to the same month of the previous year.
