KSH: in August, the number of guests increased by 5.2 percent and guest nights by 3.1 percent compared to a year earlier

In August 2025, nearly 2.8 million guests spent 7.3 million guest nights in tourist accommodations (commercial, private and other). The number of guests was 5.2 percent higher and the number of guest nights was 3.1 percent higher than a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Friday.

Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of guests was 7.9 percent higher, guest nights increased by 4.6 percent compared to August 2024. 65 percent of guests arrived at commercial accommodations, where their number increased by 5.3 percent compared to the previous year. 4.8 percent more guests were registered at private and other accommodations than a year earlier.

The number of domestic guests increased by 1.0 percent, and the guest nights spent by them decreased by 1.0 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of domestic guests increased by 0.3 percent, while the number of guest nights spent by them decreased by 2.6 percent compared to August 2024.

The nearly 1.5 million domestic guests spent 3.9 million guest nights in tourist accommodations, within which 946 thousand guests and 2.4 million guest nights were registered in commercial accommodations. 63 percent of the latter guests were received by hotels, where their number increased by 4.0 percent compared to a year earlier.

The number of domestic guests in private and other accommodation facilities fell by 2.0 percent compared to August 2024, the Central Statistical Office added.

According to the report, the number of domestic guests increased the most in the Győr-Pannonhalma tourist region compared to the same month of the previous year (by 6.5 percent), and decreased the most in the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza regions (by 6.0 percent). The number of domestic guests arriving at tourist accommodations was 18 percent higher in Budapest, and 2.2 percent lower at Lake Balaton.

The number of foreign guests increased by 10 percent, and the number of guest nights spent by them increased by 8.4 percent compared to the previous year compared to the same month of 2024. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of foreign guests increased by 12 percent and the number of guest nights spent by them increased by 10 percent compared to August 2024.

The 1.3 million foreign guests who arrived at tourist accommodation facilities spent nearly 3.4 million guest nights, of which 865 thousand guests and 2.1 million guest nights were registered at commercial accommodation facilities. 71 percent of the latter guests were received by hotels, where their number was 7.0 percent more than a year earlier. The number of foreign guests in private and other accommodation facilities exceeded August 2024 by 14 percent.

The number of foreign guests increased in all tourist areas compared to the same month of the previous year, most strongly in the Budapest area (22 percent) and in Szeged and its region (19 percent). The number of foreign guests arriving at tourist accommodations in Budapest was 8.5 percent higher, and at Lake Balaton it was 12 percent higher.
