KSH: in August, consumer prices exceeded the values of the same month of the previous year by an average of 4.3 percent
In August 2025, consumer prices were 4.3 percent higher than a year earlier. Compared to July, prices remained unchanged on average, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported on Tuesday.
In twelve months, compared to August 2024, food prices increased by 5.9 percent (4.7 percent excluding catering services), including 19.9 percent for eggs, 18.5 percent for coffee, 18.3 percent for chocolate and cocoa, 17.1 percent for seasonal foods (potatoes, fresh vegetables, and fresh domestic and tropical fruits) (28.9 percent for fresh domestic and tropical fruits), 13.6 percent for confectionery and bakery products, 13.6 percent for fruit and vegetable juices, 9.3 percent for buffet products, 8.8 percent for cooking oil, and 8.6 percent for non-alcoholic soft drinks. Within the product group, the price of margarine decreased by 29.5, flour by 11.6, sugar by 10.0, sausages by 6.6, dairy products by 6.2, and pork by 4.9 percent.
The report shows that household energy costs increased by 11.0 percent on average, with piped gas rising by 23.2 and bottled gas by 2.6 percent.
The price of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products increased by 7.3 percent, with tobacco products rising by 8.5 percent.
Services increased by 5.4 percent, with rent rising by 10.2, sports and museum tickets by 10.0, home repairs and maintenance by 9.9, vehicle repairs and maintenance by 9.8, personal care services by 9.6, and health services by 8.5 percent.
The price of durable consumer goods increased by 2.4 percent, including jewelry by 22.2, kitchen and other furniture by 6.3, room furniture by 5.2, and new passenger cars by 2.0 percent.
The price of vehicle fuels decreased by 4.3 percent, and pharmaceuticals and medical supplies increased by 4.5 percent.
In one month, compared to July, consumer prices did not change on average. The price of food did not change either (it decreased by 0.1 percent, excluding catering services). Salami, dried sausages, ham increased by 1.2, margarine by 1.1, butter, buttercream by 1.0, coffee by 0.8, poultry meat and cheese by 0.7-0.7, milk by 0.5, and non-alcoholic soft drinks by 0.4 percent. Within the product group, the price of seasonal foods (potatoes, fresh vegetables, and fresh domestic and tropical fruits) decreased by 2.1 percent, that of cooking oil by 1.3 percent, that of flour by 0.9 percent, that of pork and eggs by 0.4-0.4 percent, that of dry pasta by 0.3 percent, and that of bread by 0.2 percent.
