We must act together to preserve biodiversity
In the past fifteen years, Hungary has made an unprecedented amount of nature conservation investments in order to protect biological diversity, Minister of Agriculture István Nagy stated at the 16th Biodiversity Summit in Cali.
The head of the ministry reminded that the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was adopted two years ago, the implementation of which is now the primary task. Hungary, as the consecutive president of the Council of the European Union, strives for a solid, efficient, transparent and clear evaluation system to be adopted at the 16th Biodiversity Summit to monitor the implementation of the global strategy. Furthermore, we must work together to ensure that the resources necessary to achieve our goals are available, he added.
In his speech, István Nagy also mentioned that one fifth of Hungary’s territory is protected. And through our investments, we have improved the condition of habitat on more than 300,000 hectares, which is about 15% of these protected areas. Our country successfully developed the infrastructure of nature conservation management, for which we spent more than 300 million euros. But we will not stop there, as Hungary will implement additional nature conservation investments on at least 100,000 hectares by 2029. More than 70% of the total support amount of around 112 million euros will be used directly for the restoration of nature and the development of nature conservation infrastructure. The remaining part will serve to strengthen nature awareness, implement educational and monitoring projects, and renew nature protection information systems, the head of the agricultural ministry listed in his speech.
