Common developing by ALDI and Travelodge
In the UK, discounter Aldi is teaming up with Travelodge to launch a series of hybrid hotel-supermarket developments.
The two companies are developing sites
in Newquay and Middlesbrough which will offer budget hotel
accommodation and shopping in the same building. If successful the
joint venture is likely to be rolled out in other locations across
the country. "By developing sites jointly with Aldi we are
sending out a clear signal that the budget sector in the UK is going
to make the most of the chances presented by the economic downturn,''
according to Paul Harvey, Managing Director for Development at
Travelodge. Aldi will own the freehold on both new sites with
Travelodge as the leaseholder, in line with both companies' property
ownership models.
