Lidl Balaton swim is approaching
Next week, on July 26, the 43rd Lidl Balaton Swim, one of the most popular Hungarian leisure sports events, will be held. The event, which is also considered a curiosity on an international level, not only has a fantastic past, but also has many exciting interesting facts. Here are some surprising facts from recent years!
Lidl Hungary has been the title sponsor of the Balaton Swim since 2017 and proudly supports this iconic summer sports event, which attracts tens of thousands of people every year. Over the past nine years, a lot of amazing data has been collected – here are some interesting facts!
Since 2017, more than 66,000 people have swum across the Hungarian sea – if they had all been in the water at the same time, they would have occupied nearly 4.5 percent of the lake’s entire water surface. This is an area the size of more than 25 football fields. The average time to complete the entire distance is 2 hours 50 minutes, but three-quarters of the starters finish in 3 hours 10 minutes. During the entire 5.2 km distance, a swimmer makes an average of 3,000 arm strokes, which clearly shows how important it is to tolerate monotony in completing the distance. During this time, swimmers burn an average of about 1,800 calories, which is roughly equivalent to 3 cheese and sour cream lángos. The windiest swim so far was in 2021, when strong southwest winds slowed the swimmers not only near the shore, but also in the middle of the water. At the warmest Lidl Balaton swim in 2022, the water was 27°C and the air was 32–36°C.
The Lidl Balaton Swim is an open water swimming event specifically for amateur and hobby swimmers, but despite this, fantastic results have been achieved in recent years.
