After a break of almost ten years, reed cutting is being carried out again in Balatonfüred: with the permission of the Central Transdanubian Water Management Directorate, Probio Zrt. specialists have started cutting reeds on the eastern and western sides of Kisfaludy and Esterházy beaches, and are also maintaining the reed beds at Aranyhíd beach.
Despite the freezing weather in January, the work is being carried out with extreme caution, because the ice on Lake Balaton is currently about 7 centimeters thick, and around the reed beds it can be even thinner, so it can easily break under load. According to the regulations of the specialized authority, the reeds are cut 10 centimeters above the ice surface – said Barnabás Tóth, an employee of Probio Zrt. Depending on the weather, the work may continue for a few more days, and according to plans, reed cutting may also take place at the mouth of the Koloska stream in Lake Balaton.
Reed maintenance not only serves to make the shores more tidy: regular cutting contributes to the formation of stronger, more resistant reeds, can reduce the spread of pests, and can also improve the condition of shores used by bathers and hikers.
