The year 2022 brought GDPR fines of nearly 3 billion euros in Europe
In 2022, GDPR fines worth 1.64 billion euros were imposed in Europe, which represents a more than double increase compared to the total value of fines in the previous year, according to a global study published by DLA Piper*.
The report, in addition to summarizing and presenting the amount of GDPR fines imposed last year in Hungary and in 30 other European states, provides a comprehensive picture of enforcement trends and provides insight into expected developments.
DLA Piper has been investigating the development of data management incidents since the GDPR regulation entered into force in 2018. In line with the predictions of the previous report published at the beginning of 2022, the focus of enforcement procedures and penalties last year was on digital advertising technology (Ad-tech) and behavior-based, targeted online advertising.
