The closed bathhouse of the Hévíz Lake Spa can reopen with government support
The government has taken a significant step for the future of the Hévíz Lake Spa: they are providing 381 million forints in support for the temporary restoration of the bathhouse on the lake, which was closed this spring due to structural problems. The aim is to ensure access to the covered water as soon as possible and to allow the bathhouse’s services to operate without interruption, while the long-term development concept is also being prepared.
As is known, the iconic lake bathhouse was closed in mid-March after geodetic measurements indicated serious movements in the facility built on piles in 1968. According to expert examinations, the problem was caused by gases flowing upwards with the medicinal water damaging the supporting structures. The Hévíz Thermal Bath and St. Andrew’s Rheumatology Hospital will carry out the necessary interventions from the newly awarded state funds so that parts of the building can reopen safely.
The long-term development of the Hévíz Lake Spa has been assigned to the Ministry of Construction and Transport. The comprehensive investment plan – which could elevate the entire health tourism complex to a new level – is expected to be completed by the end of September. The goal is not only to modernize the infrastructure, but also to strengthen medical tourism.
The water of Lake Hévíz, unique in the world, does not cool below 25–26 degrees Celsius even in winter, and it welcomes about one million guests annually. Traditional Hévíz medicine and the lake bath have been a Hungarikum since 2015, and according to the region’s member of parliament, the new developments can ensure Hévíz’s outstanding position in domestic and international health tourism in the long term.
