There are serious problems with the water of Lake Balaton
The water of Lake Balaton has reached 30 degrees Celsius, which currently does not cause problems for the lake’s wildlife, but may cause serious problems in the long term, said Gergely Boros, senior scientific employee of the Balaton Limnological Research Institute, in InfoRádio. The water temperature is different in the different regions of Lake Balaton, the shallower parts heat up faster, while the temperature rise is less pronounced in the deeper areas. The measurements of the Balaton Limnological Research Institute also confirm that the water of the lake is currently between 28-30 degrees Celsius.
Although similarly high water temperatures have occurred in previous years, the current level is clearly considered unusually high. The good news, however, is that so far no extreme conditions have been experienced for the living world. No unusual algal blooms or fish kills were reported, and there were no worrisome changes in algal composition.
Nevertheless, Gergely Boros warned that the situation could easily change. The current water temperature is still within the tolerance of the Balaton fish population, but a further rise may reduce the ability of oxygen to dissolve in the water, which puts a strain on the organisms. And above a certain temperature, the willingness of fish to eat can also decrease.
The expert emphasized that it is not only the high water temperature that is a problem, but also the long windless periods. The periodic mixing of Lake Balaton’s water is essential for oxygen-rich water to reach the lower water layers, the sediment. The lack of this can cause the release of nutrients from the sediment, which can trigger the mass proliferation of algae.
