Uber received a serious fine
The Dutch data protection authority (AP) fined the ride-sharing transport company Uber 290 million euros because the company transmitted the personal data of its European drivers to the United States in an insecure manner, the body said on Monday.
According to the AP, the irregular data transfer for more than two years seriously violated the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union, which protects the data of natural persons residing in its territory and provides for the free flow of information between member states.
“In Europe, the GDPR protects people’s fundamental rights by requiring businesses and governments to handle personal data with due care. Uber failed to comply with GDPR requirements for data transfers to the United States. This is a very serious violation”
– stated Aleid Wolfsen, director of the data protection authority.
