The country’s largest hemp producer, the Dutch HempFlax, is withdrawing from Romania – economica.net reports based on the company’s announcement.

The company has entrusted the real estate consultant Cushman & Wakefield Echinox with the sale of its properties. The portfolio includes 800 hectares of agricultural land and a factory located in the Szaszsebes (Sebes) area.

HempFlax decided to withdraw from Romania as part of a strategic reassessment. The concept is to shorten supply chains, focus investments closer to Western European customers, and focus on high-value-added products instead of large-scale production.

Founded in 1993, HempFlax produces building materials, industrial raw materials, dietary supplements and bedding for pets from hemp. It has been present in Romania since 2013, where in recent years it has farmed 90 percent of the area used for hemp cultivation in the country. The plant in Szaszsebes, which was commissioned in 2015, produces building materials. The company also grows hemp in the Netherlands and Germany, and has a factory in the Netherlands.

HempFlax Europe SRL’s sales revenue decreased from 10.802 million lei (about 806 million forints) to 2.966 million lei (about 221 million forints) in two years in 2024, which ended the year with a net profit of 14,560 lei (about 1.1 million forints).
