The majority of natural bathing waters in Hungary are of high quality
Based on the evaluation system of the European Union, 94 percent of open-water bathing places in Hungary received a good or excellent rating, the National Center of Public Health (NNK) told MTI on Friday.
According to the assessment of the NNK, the number of beaches with objectionable water quality is constantly decreasing, last year only 3 natural bathing waters fell into the objectionable category.
In accordance with EU requirements, the rating was based on a complete data set of four years. Based on the NNK’s 2022 summary, the national situation is favorable: of the 279 bathing waters registered throughout the country, 176 were rated excellent, 58 good and 11 tolerable. Only 3 beaches (Maros Adventure Beach in Mako; Vadkerti Tófürdő in Soltvadkert and the beach on the Tisza beach in Tiszakécske) were included in the objectionable category. Most of the natural bathing places located next to the lakes of special importance from the point of view of tourism – Lake Balaton, Lake Tisza, Lake Velence – still have an excellent rating.
The announcement mentions that, according to the EU report, the water quality of nearly 22,000 bathing places in the member states, Albania and Switzerland is excellent in 85.6 percent. Compared to the previous year, the list of beaches was expanded by 107 newly opened bathing places, nearly 35 percent of which were opened in Poland. Among the popular summer destinations, the quality of the beaches of Croatia, Greece, Cyprus and Malta, as well as the open waters of Austria proved to be excellent in at least 94 percent in 2022.
