LG helps motorists in complicated traffic situations with augmented reality
Every car driver has probably encountered the situation when, at a complex junction, at a complicated intersection, on an unknown route, it is more challenging than usual to find your way around, to identify the distances required to proceed or the directions. The augmented reality (AR) technology developed by LG Electronics (LG) offers a solution for just that, namely by displaying clear, easy-to-interpret instructions and different driving scenarios on the in-car display by generating 3D graphics.
The system uses sophisticated algorithms to integrate data from the vehicle’s various sensors, including smart cameras, navigation systems and driving support sensors, as well as data from external data sources. By utilizing information provided by GPS, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technologies enabling communication between vehicles and their environment, the system is able to predict potential dangers based on the vehicle’s position and environment and accident risks, thereby increasing traffic safety.
One of the key elements of LG’s proprietary technology is its ability to display dynamic AR images. All of this makes route recommendations more intuitive: the solution modifies the display of vehicle-related information and directional symbols in real time based on traffic conditions. The graphic elements used by AR can separate, transform and merge, and as a result, the system can visually display complex driving information such as speed, road gradient, necessary lane changes, or route redesigns in an easy-to-understand way for the driver.
