Business sentiment improved slightly in September in the euro area and the EU
Economic sentiment improved slightly in the euro area and the EU, instead of the expected slight deterioration, but employment expectations deteriorated somewhat in both regions, according to a report by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN) on Monday.
In September, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) rose by 0.6 points to 95.5 in the EU compared to the previous month, and by 0.2 points to 95.5 in the euro area.
The Employment Expectations Index (EEI) fell by 0.9 points to 97.1 in the EU and by 1.3 points to 96.4 in the euro area compared to August.
Both indicators remain below their long-term average of 100.
Eurozone consumer confidence rose to minus 14.9 points in September 2025, in line with the preliminary estimate, from minus 15.5 points in August. Sentiment also improved across the European Union as a whole, by 0.5 points to minus 14.3 points, from minus 14.8 points in August.
Consumers were less pessimistic about their households’ future financial situation in September and showed a stronger intention to make major purchases in the next 12 months. However, households’ assessment of their past financial situation and expectations for the national economy remained largely unchanged.
