Business sentiment in German retail improved slightly in May
In May, the German retail industry business sentiment index of the ifo economic research institute of the University of Munich improved somewhat.
Based on the results published on the website of the ifo Institute (ifo Institut – Leibniz-Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung an der Universität München e.V.) on Monday, the value of the index quantifying the opinion of German retail companies on the business environment rose to minus 13.3 points after minus 14.5 points in April.
The European football championship will probably not give a significant boost to German retail as a whole. Only supermarkets, liquor stores, and sports shops can meaningfully feel the positive impact of the big sports event – said Patrick Höppner, sector expert of the ifo institute.
The indicator reflecting the perception of the current situation of German retail companies stood at minus 2.1 points in May after April.
