China reopens its market to Japanese seafood
China is reopening its market to Japanese seafood, which was banned for nearly two years due to contamination by radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant damaged by the 2011 tsunami.
China’s customs said on Sunday that the ban had been lifted and most Japanese imports would resume.
It added that the restrictions would remain in place for food imports from 10 Japanese prefectures, including Fukushima and Tokyo.
“Exporters of Japanese seafood must re-register with China, and all imported products must include certificates of conformity for health, radioactive testing and origin,”
the customs said.
The two countries agreed in September 2024 that imports of Japanese seafood could resume as long as Beijing could participate in monitoring activities. China said in April that its second round of sampling had not measured any radiation above the limit, and after a meeting in late May, the two countries announced “progress in resuming imports.”
